The gospel of John was aimed to produce faith in Jesus as Christ and Son of God. The record of the various signs was intended to produce this result, and with this in mind the many references throughout the gospel to believing and non-believing become significant. Both the historical stories and the teaching were chosen because of their power to focus attention on the specific claims of Jesus.
